Climate Change
Ecology North is very grateful to the Walter & Duncan Gordon Foundation for support to carry out these programming activities.

Ecology North is working to support NWT communities and governments in adopting a stronger response to climate change.  This work focuses on the following areas:

  • public education to increase awareness and understanding of climate change, its implications for northern communities and landscapes, and how we can take action to reduce our impact on the climate.
  • encouraging reflection on and discussion of policy tools that stimulate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions
  • assisting NWT communities and community governments in responding to climate change

Some specific activities Ecology North has been involved in to support these objectives include the following:

·
Ecology North has produced two plain-language papers on Climate Change:  Climate Change Mitigation, and Adapting to Climate Change

·    Ecology North has produced a report and newsletter on the Gwichya Gwich’in (Tsiigehtchic) Climate Change Adapation Plan. Please call Doug at (867) 873-8897 or email him at doug@ecologynorth.ca for more information.

·    Public educational workshops and film screenings, including visits to communities in various regions of the NWT

·
Presentations on climate change for school and college classes, youth organizations and community group

·
Hands-on workshops to assist Yellowknifers in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable living programs

·
Ecology North has written a discussion paper on the potential impacts of climate change on municipal water and wastewater systems in the NWT:  Navigating the Waters of Change or click here for a Fact Sheet on Navigating the Waters of Change

·    Ecology North has prepared highlights of a discussion paper on Greening the NWT Economy.
