Earth Week 2010!

Ecology North has organized a range of events to celebrate Earth Week

and encourage Yellowknifers to take time out of their busy schedules

to appreciate and celebrate our relationship with the Earth.


Thursday, April 22

 

Earth Day Fish Fry!

In front of the Post Office, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Happy Earth Day!  Join us for a fish fry featuring local fish to support action on global climate change.

 

Film Screening!

Northern United Place Auditorium, 7:30 pm,  Admission by donation

“The End of the Line: Imagine A World Without Fish”

The world’s first major documentary about the devastating effect of overfishing. Imagine an ocean without fish. Guided Noon-Hour Nature Walk with local biologist Suzanne Carrière

Join local biologist Suzanne Carrière on a noon hour nature walk as she guides you through the wonderful, mysterious world of tree reproduction.

 

“Biodiversity, What’s That!?”

NUP Auditorium, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Biodiversity, what does that mean?  And why should you care?  Come have these and other questions answered by a panel of local biologists.  They will describe the flora and fauna found in the NWT as well as some of the survival challenges these species face.

Backyard and Worm Composting Workshop

Come learn how to turn your kitchen scraps into a rich, usable fertilizer for your garden!  Bring a small container to carry worms home in!

 

Northern Gardening Teahouse

NUP Auditorium, 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Come and have your northern gardening questions answered in a casual drop-in atmosphere!  Local experts will be ready and waiting to answer any question you may have!

Earth Week Youth Bike Challenge

Civic Plaza, 2:00 pm – 4:00pm

CALLING ALL YOUTH (loosely defined)!  Looking for an afternoon, urban adventure? Grab your bike and a few friends (teams of 2 to 4 are recommended) and pedal your booty off for this scavenger hunt on wheels!  Warning: Prepare to venture into Yellowknife’s ‘earthiest’ places.  Prizes will be awarded for collecting the most items, creativity and speed.  To register, or for more info contact earthweekbikechallenge@gmail.com.

Electoral Incentives and Canadian Environmental Policy

Political scientist Daniel Wong summarizes a portion of his master’s thesis research.  He argues that Canadian public opinion on the environment is cyclical and has a direct relation to government policy.  30-minute talk followed by a 15-minute Q&A.

 

Earth Week Panel on Housing and Renovation

NUP Auditorium, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Learn and discuss ideas on construction, sustainability, energy and saving money.  An event for anyone thinking of building or renovating with concerns about our Northern energy costs and availability of the Earth’s resources.

Biodiesel Creation in the North

Did you know that you can heat your home with the used oil from a restaurant deep fryer?  Join us in learning about Ecology North’s plans to start a biodiesel pilot project in Yellowknife….find out the who, what, where, when and why of this exciting new project!

 

Greening Your Place of Worship

Come and view a selection of short videos that show the efforts of various faith communities to lessen the environmental impact of their worship services.  Short discussion to follow.

Recycling Relay, en Francais!

École Allain St-Cyr, 12:00 pm – 12:50 pm

Les étudiants des écoles d’immersion de Yellowknife, se rencontrent pour s’affronter et voir quelle équipe réalisera la plus grande et la plus belle sculpture d’objets recyclés.  Les parents sont les bienvenus!

Middle school French-immersion students from across the city gather to compete and see which school team can build the biggest and best sculpture out of recycled items.  Parents are welcome to attend!

 

Downtown Volunteer Litter Pickup Season-Opener

Meet at Javaroma, 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Solid Waste Management Public Forum

Silent Auction ends at 9:30 pm sharp!

Come hear talented local musicians and bid on great auction items including planters painted by talented local artists.  Performances by The Dawgwoods, Mildred Hall School Choir, The Aurora Fiddlers, and more! This is an event for the whole family!

Youth Ecology Club Returns!

Calling all youth (ages 7-14) and families from Yellowknife, N'dilo and Dettah!  The Youth Ecology Club is back with more exciting, extracurricular adventures.  Our activities focus on fun, hands-on learning about the local landscape, inter-cultural sharing and about how we can use local resources to provide for ourselves.
